July 17 Prince of Whales

Lovey afternoon of whale watching today! We found 3 species of whales, including minkes, finbacks and a humpback! Quite the variety!

We began by watching a curious minke whale. This 25-foot whale was surfacing frequently. As we waited for it to reappear, some diligent passengers on the bow were pointing straight down, under the boat! I looked over the rail to see this minke whale swimming along-side us and then it went under the boat! On the opposite side, it took some time to check us out before peeling off to find some more food. Quite the awesome minke viewing!

We then saw a spout in the distance- a fin whale! This whale was moving though- taking long dives and heading south. We got a few glimpses of it in the distance before we decided to move along and head further offshore.

Soon, another blow was spotted. As we moved into the area, we found a humpback whale. This particular whale was Hornbill- one of our recent frequent visitors to the area!

Humpback whale named Hornbill, first seen in 1977

As Hornbill went down on feeding dives, we were entertained by the 2 or so minke whale in the area. At one point the minke whale was surfacing, and then before we knew it, the humpback whale surfaced in the same spot!

On our way home we spotted another blow. This was another fin whale, and it was also down for 10+ minute dives and traveling so we never got too close to it.
All in all a beautiful, and cooler, day on the Ledge! Thanks to all of our wonderful passengers for your great questions and enthusiasm! And congratulations to our lucky raffle winner, Ilijana, who took home a whale adoption!
