Saturday's Atlantic Queen Trip

Beautiful day on the water today, with fairly calm seas and surprisingly sunny skies.  There seemed to be a number of whales around, but initially it was difficult to get close looks at them. Then we came upon Gondolier, a  humpback whale at least 19 years old. Gondolier delighted us with some close looks as the whale moved around the boat, appearing to feed further below the surface. We think there was another humpback in the area, too, but only saw its spout once.

There were some minke whales around, too - we recorded at least 3 of them, although they were difficult to get a look at. And then we had a surprise sighting of a huge basking shark! We estimate that this shark was 20-25 feet long and we stopped the boat, and it swam up to us, under the pulpit and out the other side.  It was an amazing look at this plankton-eating filter feeder!

In addition, saw a few different bird species - lots of gulls, several Wilson's storm-petrels, a juvenile northern gannet, and a greater shearwater.

Thanks to all who joined us today - we hope to see you again soon!
