Sunday on the Prince of Whales- Newburyport

Fin whale blow- close up!

Finbacks and humpbacks today, and we didn't have to go too far from home to find them! We began our trek from Newburyport by encountering a fin whale only about 7 miles off shore. This whale was difficult to get looks at, so we continued on. We found an area that had lots of whales, all spread out. Blows seemed to be most everywhere! We spend some time with a very nice pair of finbacks who were happy to swim right along with us as we all slowly moved south.

We also found a humpback in this area and we have yet to ID that whale but will update this post when we know.

As we were watching our new humpback, we saw some large splashes in the distance. Turns out this was Trident, a whale we saw yesterday who was very active. Today she did not dissappoint, and was tail-lobbing as we approached.

Then, to our surprise, she breached! I am still amazed to see a huge whale come nearly all the way out of the water! What a sight! After the breach, Trident began to flipper-slap. Why she was doing this, we may never know, but we always enjoy watching it!

For those of you who missed capturing the dramatic leap, here is the series I was lucky to get:
