Whales, whales, and more whales...

Well, I have to say that the whale watching over the last several days has been the best it’s been in quite some time and we have been quite busy aboard the Granite State, attempting to identify lots of whales that have returned to the Ledge. With more visitors returning for the first time this season, it’s difficult to keep up. With over 20 whales in one area over the last couple of days, it’s been a little overwhelming. No matter where you look, there are Fin whales, Minke’s, and Humpback’s all around. The activity has been endless.

This morning we had 4 Fin whales, 1 Minke, and about 18 Humpback whales. The ones we were able to identify, included Hornbill, Trowel, Solas, Clipper and her calf, Sword, Scylla, Newton, Valley, Trident, Colt, Milkyway, Glowstick, and yet another new visitor this season, Wizard. Wizard is an adult female that was seen for the first time in the early 90’s. It was quite the surprise.

We were also surprised by Clipper and her new calf. I do have to admit, that Clipper's calf is one of the largest I have seen in a long time and our passengers were treated to seeing the calf fluke next to the boat.

Fantastic feeding displays were seen throughout the morning, especially from Newton, Colt, and Valley. Here are Newton and Valley eating lots of food.

In the afternoon, we found 13 Fin whales, 2 Minke’s, about 100 dolphins, and about 10 Humpbacks. The interesting finding yet again, was that the Humpbacks whales we saw this afternoon were none we found in the morning. We also had 4 Fin whales traveling together at one time amongst all the Humpback whales. We were able to identify Pinball, Tigris, Quote, Upsilon, Tripod, and Chromosome. We have seen Tripod and Chromosome frequently this summer and they always seem to be together when we find them. Just when you think whales should be full from eating, they simply continue on. It’s definitely time to bulk up before heading south this coming winter. We aboard the Granite State have nicknamed them the Dynamic Duo! Just look at this feeding display. It simply never gets old.

With more whales returning everyday, it’s truly a summer of memories.
