August 20 - Prince of Whales- Newburyport

What a day of patience and searching. We were excited heading out as we had heard that 2 sperm whales were still in the area! One boat reported seeing what may have been one of the elusive whales. We moved in and waited and waited...I saw a couple blows in the distance that could have been a sperm whale but we waited 22 minutes more and didn't see anything else. As our time offshore was dwindling fast, we chose to leave the area and search other locations for more-viewable animals, even though we really wanted everyone on board to be able to experience the rare mammal.

After a bit of searching, a whale surfaced nearby- at first I thought this was a fin whale, common to the area, but after another closer look, I realized it was a sei whale! This was our first sei whale of the year!! These whales are not seen in our area all that often and some years we don't see any at all! We spent 20 minutes with this cooperative whale as it was moving slowly to the south.

Sei whale back and dorsal fin- looks like an upside down surf board!

Thanks to those with patience and understanding today! We really never know what we will find on the ocean from day to day or even trip to trip.
