Today was a beautiful day on the water. We had the great fortune to see 3 North Atlantic right whales! It's funny - not many whales around this afternoon, and we happened to see 3 of one of the most rare large whale species on Earth!
Right whales can grow to about 60 feet in length, and weigh up to 80 tons - they are huge animals! They were named because they were considered the "right" whale to hunt, and were hunted so much that they were declared endangered by 1935. Today, it's estimated that there are only about 425 of these animals left.
We haven't identified these individuals yet, but if we do, we'll post more information here. You can visit this site to learn more about identifying right whales and the New England Aquarium's photo catalog.
Thanks, as always, to all who joined us today - we had great passengers on board with lots of good questions, and who showed lots of support for our marine conservation efforts! Today, for example, we had folks celebrating birthdays and anniversaries - it's always very cool when we (and the whales) can be part of these happy moments! Best of luck to you, frequent passengers Marty and Joyce Briner, in your future endeavors - hope to see you again sometime!
