Thursday on the Starfish

Spent the afternoon on the Starfish out of Hampton today, which is unusual for me.  Had a great group of folks, including a bus group from Newport who were in Hampton for the day.

We had great looks at lots of marine life today, including a tuna who leaped several times, and a minke whale near the Isles of Shoals. Then, with much anticipation, we moved out to look for the sperm whale that was in the area yesterday, and ended up finding the whale!  It dove pretty quickly after we got there, affording us a great look at the whale's almost heart-shaped flukes.  The whale was down for 26 minutes, but then came up and started doing shorter dives.

After several great looks at the sperm whale, a real rarity in this area (they are usually in much deeper water greater than 600'), we watched a pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins on the way home, and it was a very active pod.
