Humpback Whale |
What a beautiful morning on the ocean! Whales were plentiful, with a total of 30-40 Atlantic white-sided dolphins, 6 humpbacks, a fin whale, and a minke!
We started out with an active pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins. These cold-water dolphins are 7-9 feet long and seemed busy feeding today, but we got some good looks.

Then, we saw 3 humpbacks up ahead - this soon turned into 4, which then turned into 6! We first spent time with one of my favorite whales, Trident - and her new calf! Trident was born in 1982 and this is her 9th calf. I've been watching Trident for years now, and it's always exciting when our old friends come back to visit in the summer.

After watching Trident and her calf, we moved on to more humpbacks, and at one point we had 4 around us. We identified a few more individuals:
|
Chickadee, born in 2006 |
|
Snare, born in 2007 |
|
Flicker (the fluke), first sighted in 2008, with Chickadee in the foreground |
|
Striation, born in 2007 to Pepper, one of the first whales to be named! |
There was also a fin whale and minke whale milling around in this whale hot spot!
All in all, it was a great day. We enjoyed having students aboard who came all the way from the White Mountains region, along with passengers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey! Thanks to all who joined us and we hope to see you again soon.
