June 10 Prince of Whales

Lots of fin whales just to the west of Jeffreys Ledge today! Thanks to the excellent observing skills of our intern, Zelia, we found and then stayed with a pair of fin whales for about 45 minutes. These whales were feeding on herring near the bottom (360 feet below the surface!). A few other fin whales were seen in the distance- their tall, 20-foot blows visible for miles!

A minke whale popped up in the same area too. Next we headed along the edge of the Ledge and found a humpback whale! This whale had been seen by our affiliates on the Atlantic Queen a few days ago but we still are not sure who it is. Check out the distinctive markings on the flukes! As we were waiting for it to re-appear, it gave us a big surprise and breached right off our bow! Amazing! Although it only happened once, most everyone on the boat got to see it!

Although miles from shore, this whale appeared to be heading straight for the twin lighthouses on Thatcher Island, off of Cape Ann.

Thank to our group from Vermont for sailing with us today!
