Sunday's Atlantic Queen Trip

Satula with Cape Ann, MA in the background
It was a perfect Father's Day on the ocean!  There were probably 7 humpbacks and a couple minke whales in the area, but we spent a lot of our time with one of our favorite (and one of our adoptable!) humpbacks, Satula! Satula was first identified in 1988, and we believe he is a male.

Satula surprised us with a few tail breaches at one point-  we're not sure why whales do this - we think sometimes they might be excited about something, or are wanting to communicate something to other whales, or maybe even they're tired of getting attention. Satula did 2 or 3 tail breaches, throwing his back end into the air, and followed this with a lobtail, keeping our interns busy sequencing his behavior.

There were a number of boats in the area, so we didn't stay with Satula much longer, but caught quick looks at two other humpbacks who have been around lately, Clamp, a female born in 1990, and Gondolier, a whale first sighted in 1992.

Thanks to all who joined us today and helped support our marine conservation work, and to Grey, who won a Satula adoption kit in our daily raffle!
