July 16 on the Granite State

Another day and we were again presented with fog offshore this morning. This weather pattern, while we have no control over it, still can get to us after a while. So was the case today when we came into an area where we've had successful sightings of whales and which happened to be the exact area where the fog was the worst! Luckily the whales seemed to be behaving better than the weather. We ended up finding 4 different groups, or pods, of Atlantic white-sided dolphins! With our group from Wolfeboro Parks and Recreation these whales provided quite the entertainment and excitement for all the kids, and chaperones, on board! A great find and an impressive fact that we came across so many pods today. Each group we sighted had anywhere from 10-40 animals together, allowing for some nice looks and even sharing our dolphins with our friends on the Prince of Whales. They too were in search of whales this morning and helped to scour Jeffreys Ledge in the fog.

This afternoon the fog cleared (hooray!) and we were all out searching a Southern portion of the Ledge. Thanks to the communication with all our affiliated whale watching vessels, the Prince of Whales, the Atlantic Queen II, and ourselves aboard the Granite State, got a chance to spend time with the Humpback whales Diablo and her calf. We also got a chance to show our passengers a large Fin whale that was surfacing not too far from the Humpback whales.

Not even fog kept us from having another successful day of whale watching on Jeffreys Ledge today. While the weather sometimes makes the possibility of finding whales a bit more challenging, we always do all that we can to find those whales while Mother Nature continues to keep us on our toes!
