Saturday's Atlantic Queen Trip

Well, I'll echo my colleagues in saying Saturday's trip involved lots of patience, and showed us that whales are not always where we want them to be. They're wild animals, after all!  We were thrilled to get a report of a whale on Jeffreys Ledge as we headed out - much closer to Rye than our trips over the past couple weeks.  So we headed out there, along with our friends on the Granite State and Prince of Whales.

Eventually, the Granite State called us with a report of a fin whale - we got a few great looks at this whale before it was time to go home.  Below you can see photos of its blow, beautiful swirly, gray chevron pattern (which we can use to tell this whale apart from other individuals) and long back.

The fin whale sighting was great, but just prior to that, we had a tuna sighting that was phenomenal! We cruised up to an area where we'd seen some splashing, and suddenly there were bluefin tuna (some several feet long) jumping clear out of the water in pursuit of prey!

Unfortunately, I was too busy watching the tuna in awe to take any photos, but here's a NOAA image that shows what they look like:

Thanks to those who joined us today - it was a beautiful day on the water, a great day for a cruise! Hope to see you again soon!
