June 16 Atlantic Queen

Pinball
After talking with our other whale watching friends, we headed down to the southern end of Jeffreys Ledge again this afternoon. As we approached the area where we had reports, I was a little nervous, as there were a two other boats around, more boats headed our way, and reports of one whale. I wondered how we could get a good look while not disturbing the whale, and sharing space with other boats around.

Not to worry - as we approached the couple boats, and watched from a distance, the whale started approaching us. It was Pinball again! Pinball is a 24-year old female humpback who has been seen in the Jeffreys Ledge area several times over the past few weeks.

As we sat on the water, Pinball came closer, and dove right near us. Then she appeared again next to us several times. At one point, as she approached us, the wind was going in just the right direction (well, maybe not, depending on your point of view) and her spout drifted right over us. I got a nice whiff of stinky whale breath - a sure sign that Pinball had been feeding recently!

Pinball's fluke again!

As Pinball stretched out right next to the boat, we could see her huge, 40-50 foot body and white flippers.  What an amazing sight!  Even after whale watching for many years, it is still such a thrill to experience a whale that close, especially when it is acting so relaxed.

Thanks to everyone who joined us today!
