Great blackback gull searching for whales with us
This whale, who I believe may be #9904, looks like she was swimming in a sea of sparkling diamonds. As we searched for signs of marine life today, I was hoping to find a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. Today was Intern Willy's last trip with us after helping on the boat for the past week, and Willy really wanted to see a blue whale. Well, we did not find the elusive blue, but we did find 6 fin whales (the second largest animal), a humpback whale, and a minke whale that only Willy and his mom were lucky enough to see!
With the sea and sky conditions today, the blows from these whales were standing out like geysers on the horizon.

After viewing a few fin whales, we saw a smaller blow to the east. A young humpback surfaced, and seemed to be all over the place until I looked down next to the boat and saw the neon green glow of the flippers. As it surfaced, we all got fabulous looks at Siphon's 2009 calf.

We are always surprised when whales decide to show themselves off to us! It can be easy forget that these animals are wild, and that every close encounter is special.
Thanks, Willy, for all your help on the boat this week! We hope to see you back here soon!
