Very nice sightings this morning with a minke whale, fin whale and basking shark (no, not a great white...)!
This afternoon was a different story. The fog cleared but we still had a difficult time finding marine mammals. Our first minke whale was elusive. Next, we got a couple quick looks at a blue shark. A report came through of a humpback in the area but after a long time searching with two other boats, we never found it. Our ride home took us over new water, and surprisingly, we found another, more cooperative minke whale about 6 miles offshore. But we were low on time and could only get a couple looks at this 30-foot whale. On the plus side, our afternoon passengers get to come out with us again this summer to try their luck a second time!
We sometimes become complacent in the world of wild animal viewing. Expectations are high and we need to keep ourselves grounded by remembering that we are searching for wild, endangered animals in a 33,000 square-mile habitat. Frequently, many whales are within our range, but now and then, they are very sparse. This afternoon was one of those days but we are hopeful for a better day tomorrow.
