Humpbacks, finbacks and tuna today!
What a great day to escape the heat and visit Jeffreys Ledge! The whales were closer than yesterday, and we got fabulous looks at a mother and calf pair of humpbacks, and an adult pair of finbacks! Plus bluefin tuna were scooting about in the area along with loads of gannets, shearwaters and petrels!
Our humpbacks were Diablo and calf. Diablo was born in 1983 and this is her 5th calf that we know about! She and her newest calf were very cooperative, surfacing near our boat several times, and then the calf began to nurse!
After several great looks at this pair, we moved off to find some other whales in the area. Not long after leaving, we spotted one blow, that turned into two blows. A pair of finback whales surfaced close by, allowing us to compare the differences between humpbacks and finbacks. The finbacks were a bit wiggly, zig zagging around the area and keeping us on the lookout.
As we were hoping to get some last looks at these huge fin whales, the clock was ticking and we needed to go. To our surprise, the humpbacks Diablo and calf surfaced right off our bow! This was a wonderful and touching end to our day- watching an endangered mother and calf peacefully swim in the cool waters off of Newburyport. This was yet another reminder of our place on the planet, and the responsibility we all share to ensure these animals have a safe place to live along side us.
Thanks to all of our curious passengers who had insightful questions and thoughts throughout the trip today for myself, Danielle and Ally.
