July 17- Prince of Whales- Newburyport

Lots of nice looks at humpback whales and dolphins today!

We started with a familiar face (or dorsal fin, I should say)- Siphon's 2009 calf! This wandering yearling was seen just a couple days ago on the northern part of Jeffreys Ledge and today it was on the southern part- about 25 miles apart! We got some nice close looks at this animal but never got a great look at the flukes. Fortunately, the dorsal fin and white scars on the edges of the flukes are enough for us to identify it!

We continued on and with the help of another boat in the area, found a nice pod of Atlantic white sided dolphins! These dolphins were quite active and we were all able to get great looks.
Next, two humpbacks were seen in the area but being a bit evasive. We managed to get a few shots of one of the whales and thanks to Melanie on the Granite State, have ID'ed it as Lavalier's 2009 calf! Two yearlings in the same trip! Lavalier herself was seen not too long ago as well! Looks like her calf is taking after her feeding spots!

The bluefin tuna were jumping all over, and loads of pelagic birds were around. Below is a Cory's shearwater- fairly rare to find up here!

Thank to all of you for visiting with us today! See you soon!
