August 17 - Prince of Whales- Newburyport

Heading towards Jeffreys Ledge this afternoon, we were surprised by a minke whale inshore that surfaced once very close to us, and then disappeared. A few lucky passengers got to see this shy whale.

We had reports of other whales in the area by the ledge- some reports were only minutes old but we still couldn't relocate those whales. Sometimes whales are on the move- traveling, swimming at 10 knots and surfacing only every 20 minutes. When that is the case, they may surface a few miles away from us, and in hazy conditions can be impossible to see.

But we got lucky and with some help from our friends on the Granite State, we found two huge fin whales. One of these remained distant but the other was very cooperative and gave us some great looks. We still don't know who this whale is but with its distinct dorsal fin and scarring, we should be able to ID it or assign it a new ID number soon!!
On our trip home we got even more lucky but coming upon a pod of Atlantic white sided dolphins. We spent about 10 minutes with the pod before the fog set in and visibility was reduced to nothing. I guess that was Mother Nature's way of saying we were done and that it was time to go home.

Thanks for all of the inquisitive questions today!
