August 5- Prince of Whales- Newburyport

What a crazy weather day! Heat and humidity, cool breezes, fog, wind, rain..... and thunder and lightning!! Mother Nature was certainly showing what she had to offer today!

We had to travel a bit further than we usually do on most trips to get to where the whales have been but soon upon reaching the area, a huge fin whale surfaced. I believe, now looking at the images on a larger screen, that this was whale #0802. Fin whales can be tricky to ID in the field and I am still hoping some of my colleagues on other boats in the area have good images of the right side which will help me to ID this critter positively.

Silvery spout- a fin whale surfacing for a breath

Fin whale #0802???

Leaving the fin whale, we motored towards our friends on the Atlantic Queen who reported seeing a humpback whale nearby. The first spout we saw was not of a humpback, but of another large fin whale!! Soon after we spotted the humpback. I haven't had time to attempt to identify this whale yet but perhaps one of the other posts on this site will know who it was...???...

Humpback whale flukes- who is it?

All in all, in spite of the wet conditions, we all had a great time on the Ledge today! Thanks for all of your support and we hope to see you out with us again on another day!
