Dolphin Day on the Atlantic Queen

Atlantic white-sided dolphins right off the bow
Today the whales reminded us that they're wild animals, and they're not always where we hope they'll be.  We did a lot of searching, both inshore and on Jeffreys Ledge, and came upon a great pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins!

Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins

These dolphins were clearly on a mission - they were obviously chasing some bait fish in the water, traveling very quickly and rapidly changing direction. To add to the excitement, they were followed by several different bird species - a flock of Wilson's storm petrels, a few greater shearwaters, gulls, and the occasional tern. Several times, the dolphins passed near the bow and stern, affording us great looks.  We were glad that they were out there - it's always great to watch a species that spends most of its time on the water surface.

So, an afternoon with toothed whales - not too shabby, and we're likely at the dock for the next couple days due to the pending storm.  Maybe the easterly winds will shake things up a bit and bring some whales close to shore later in the week!
