August 8 Atlantic Queen

Crystal heads toward the twin lights on Thacher Island
We figured from yesterday's trip that we should probably head straight down toward the tip of Cape Ann in search of whales. The sightings didn't disappoint!

We started off with terrific looks at Crystal, a male humpback and the first known calf of Salt. Crystal was born in 1980.  We got great looks at his tail as he fluked several times and appeared to be taking shallow dives.

We then thought we saw the silhouette of a shark fin, but it turned out to be a harbor seal, swimming right near Crystal.

After some terrific looks at Crystal and the seal, we headed offshore a bit and saw a minke whale, then a fin whale - second-largest species on Earth!  After a couple looks at this whale, it was time to head home.

On the way to and from the whales, we also got some scenic views of what we think is the schooner Harvey Gamage!

Thanks to all who joined us today!
